If you’ve been reading my monthly holidays for marketing and planning articles, you’ve likely picked up on my love of food — especially desserts. I blame it on my father but that’s another story.
I mention this because, when I started looking through this month’s holidays, I was immediately drawn to ice cream. And, since we’re in the dog days of summer and August is Black Business Month, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to share some Black-owned Ice Cream Shops with you.
With days like Ice Cream Sandwich day (Aug. 2nd), National Root Beer Float Day (Aug. 6th), National Ice Cream Pie Day (Aug. 18th), and National Soft Ice Cream Day (Aug 19th), I was poised to wax poetic about the genius of ice cream. But then I realized that August 15th is World Honey Bee Day and I recognize that as much more important than ice cream. After all, we wouldn’t have all the yummy flavors of ice cream without those little super pollinators.
To celebrate all things honey bee with your customers, clients, employees, and readers, encourage everyone to plant wildflower gardens, buy local honey, plant crocus in the fall, and refrain from killing off dandelions in the spring. Share honey bee trivia questions on Facebook, honey bee images on Instagram, and sweet honey recipes on Pinterest.
For my part, in celebration of National Trail Mix Day (Aug. 31st), I’m sharing one of my favorite “honey” recipes, Gorp. Originally from the Colorado Cache Cookbook created by the Junior League of Denver, I’ve been making this version for over a decade.
Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the ice cream! As a matter of fact, I found this honey ice cream recipe and I’ll be whipping up a batch this weekend to give it a try.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and no matter what days you choose to celebrate with your customers, clients, family, and friends, be sure to share the joy!
Hmm, I wonder how honey ice cream would taste with Gorp sprinkled on top?
August holidays — 2021
- August 2nd – National Coloring Book Day – To give your customers some creative downtime, create a custom coloring page with your logo, save it as a downloadable .pdf and share the link in your newsletter. To make it even more fun, invite your customers to color it and post their finished pieces on social media for a prize — create a special hashtag for them to use and ask them to tag you so you can find all of the great entries!
- August 7th – National Lighthouse Day – This is a great day to be a beacon of hope and encourage your readers to do the same. Think about starting a match donation drive to save the lighthouses around the country, sharing some of your favorite lighthouse images, poems, or stories and educate your readers about the history of lighthouses and why they’re worth saving.
- August 9th – Book Lovers Day – This is a great time to share the benefits of reading books with your customers. If you’re not a bookseller, but you know one, partner with them to offer discounts at each others’ shops. Or, think about partnering with your local library and starting a book club or sponsoring an event. Then be sure to let your customers know about it via email, social media, or SMS.
- August 28th – National Thoughtful Day – This is a great day to do something thoughtful and encourage others to make thoughtful gestures as well. Whether it’s a special note to say thank you with a discount code, a BOGO offer, or an invitation to come in and get a free gift (maybe some wildflower seeds for those honey bees, a discount coupon for your neighbor’s bookstore, or a yummy honey stick), there’s always something thoughtful you can do for your customers and your employees.
