As a Boot Camp trainer, I help many small business owners and nonprofits improve their email marketing. I teach them everything from how to grow and manage their email lists to how to write better subject lines.
One question I’ve received quite a bit in the past few weeks when it comes to getting started with email marketing is, “What are my first steps?”
Here are the steps you should take first:
1. Upload your contacts
Before you can send out your first email newsletter, you’ll need to upload your contact list into Constant Contact. Having all of your contacts in one place lets you communicate with them and manage your list easily. Just make sure you have permission from the contacts you plan to email.
2. Send your first newsletter
In your first newsletter, you should let everyone on your list know what they can expect going forward in terms of frequency and content. Include pictures of your staff, phone numbers, social media buttons, address, hours of operation, and any other important contact information. This is the perfect time to show off your company’s personality so that your customers get a feel for who you are and what your company is about. Have fun with it!
3. Set up a welcome email
When someone new joins your list, you’ll want them to receive an email similar to the newsletter above. You can set up an automatic welcome letter for this purpose. Your welcome email is the place where you can introduce yourself to brand new customers, start to build a relationship with them, and tell them what they can expect to receive from you.
4. Make it easy for new contacts to join your list
Every person that you come in contact with should be able to sign up to join your list easily. If this is not the case, missed opportunities await you. Add a sign-up form on your website and Facebook Page, and think about setting up text-to-join so that customers can sign up to receive your emails using their mobile device.
