Google Hangout and How Small Businesses Can Use it for Content Marketing

You may have heard about the “new” (well, not so new anymore) social media platform called Google+.

If you don’t already use it, there’s a multitude of reasons why you should have a presence on Google+, from SEO value to thought leadership. One big reason you should try Google+, a reason often missing from many lists, is the Google Hangout.

A Google Hangout is a tool that allows you to have a group conversation. You can capture photos, share your screen, and message friends. You can also turn any Hangout into a live video call with up to 10 friends. It’s essentially Skype for more than 2 people. Once you hit the “broadcast” button on your Google Hangout, your Google+ connections can watch your video live on your Google+ page. The video will also be posted to your YouTube account to allow for promotion after you’ve held your Hangout.

Google Hangouts have some really cool features too, as you can see in the photo above. You can share your screen with everyone on the call or you can even add silly sunglasses or hats to your head. Yes, it tracks where your head is! These features make any Hangout fun.

Share your expertise

As a small business owner, a Google Hangout is a great way to show your customers that you are an expert in your field. It’s the perfect place to promote yourself and your business while sharing valuable information. If you’re a consultant, especially if you’re a social media consultant, creating Google Hangouts and sharing them on your other social channels shows that you know what you’re doing and that you have a presence on all kinds of networks.

What do I talk about?

The question you should really be asking yourself is,”What am I an expert in?”

Do you own a pet store?

Bring a couple pet owners on, with their dogs of course, and ask them questions about their favorite products. Are you a marketing consultant? Invite a couple of your marketing friends and talk about the best practices in your field.

There are many ways you can approach the Hangout, but the most important thing to remember is that you must promote your video after you record it.

How can I use a Google Hangout for content marketing?

Use your Hangout for all it’s worth! If you have a website, send viewers to it. Include a call-to-action in the caption below your Hangout on your YouTube channel that sends viewers to your website.

One of the reasons why Google Hangouts are so great is because they are housed on YouTube, which means you can promote your video on your other social channels.

Just grab the URL of your video from YouTube, tell your audience what to expect, and then send them straight to your video.

Don’t forget your email! Most email providers give you a place to use your YouTube URL so you can easily include it in your email. If you can’t find this feature, you can grab the embed code found under the “share” tab in YouTube and place the HTML in your email code.

Do you have a website? Use it! You can also use the embed code found on YouTube to include this video on your website. If the Hangout shows you as an expert, use it. If it shows your customers, use it. Basically, if it puts you, your customers or your products in a good light, use it!

At the end of the day, Content Marketing is using content to market your business. Google Hangouts are a great way to create your own unique content, while promoting you or your business.
