4 Out of 5 Mobile Users Will Use Mobile Devices to Aid in Holiday Shopping … and Other Hot Topics

This holiday season, your customers will be doing more online research than ever before. And for the vast majority of them, that research will be taking place on-the-go.

80% of mobile users will rely on their mobile devices this holiday shopping season. And with 600 million people using mobile devices to access Facebook these days—your Page could be where they look first.

1. 80% of mobile users will use devices to aid in holiday shopping

Mobile is expected to have a huge influence on the 2012 holiday shopping season. A recent study from Google found that 80% of all mobile users plan to use the devices to aid in holiday shopping.

How will mobile devices be used?

  • 45% to compare prices
  • 44% to find nearby stores based on location
  • 39% to look for coupons
  • 34% to read reviews

In addition, 53% of consumers plan to do more online research overall, than they did in 2011.

Bottom Line: The increased focus on mobile should show small businesses that consumers are hungry for information this holiday season. They want to know what you’re offering, what type of promotion you’re running, and how your business can help them make better holiday shopping decisions.

A great place to start is on your social networks. 80% of mobile users access sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest through their mobile devices and it will likely be the first place they look when researching your store this season.

2. Facebook now has 600 million monthly mobile users

Over 600 million people now share and connect on Facebook every month using mobile devices. This comes as part of an announcement from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who said the social network has seen a 61% increase in mobile activity since 2011.

The company also announced that Facebook added 10 million users since crossing the 1 billion user mark in September.

Bottom Line: Mobile is completely reshaping the way businesses need to think of social media marketing. 60% of all Facebook users are now accessing the site via a mobile device, and it’s likely that number is even higher for your customer base. Think of the content you’re sharing on Facebook—does it work on mobile? Will customers have time to read or view it, and engage with it? These are all things you’ll need to keep in mind when it comes to creating social content.

3. Pinterest rolls out verified accounts

Pinterest will finally let users tell their followers they are in fact, who they say they are.

The social network announced on Thursday that it is launching a new feature for users to “verify” that they own the website posted on their profile. Other social networks like Facebook and Twitter already offer verified accounts, and like those networks the verified status will only be available to “top-level” domains.

When you visit a page of a verified account, you will now see a red checkmark next to the user’s website on their profile.

Bottom Line: While most (if not all) small businesses won’t have the ability to verify their own accounts, they will be able to make decisions of where they are finding content. If, for example, your business carries a certain line of products, you will now be able to verify it’s coming from a trusted source. And you can find some great inspiration from influential verified users in your industry.

4. Twitter expands expanded Tweets

Twitter announced this week that they will be expanding expanded tweets, and will now offer users more than 2,000 ways to engage directly with content, on web or mobile, without navigating away from the site.

Expanded tweets have already had a major influence on the way users think of the social network. While in the past you would have to travel to different sites to do anything but read tweets or look at pictures—now you engage with content and do anything from watch movies to view entire presentations.

Bottom Line: More engagement within Twitter means people will be spending more time on the social network—plain and simple. As a small business, you need to take advantage of the benefits of expanded tweets. That will likely start with using the power of photos and videos.

If you haven’t already, it’s time to stop thinking of Twitter as a network limited to 140 characters or less.

5. Pinterest cracks the top 50 most-visited sites

Pinterest has joined the ranks of Facebook (4th), LinkedIn (26th), Twitter (27th), and Instagram (47th) as one of the top 50 most-visited websites. According to a report from ComScore, September marked the first month when Pinterest broke through as the 50th most-visited website.

Pinterest attracted more than 25 million visitors in the month of September.

Bottom Line: Much of Pinterest’s most recent growth can likely be attributed to the sites decision to provide open-registration, rather than its old system of requesting invitations.

The surge in Pinterest traffic is presenting some exciting opportunities for small businesses—especially those in the retail industry. 69% of Pinterest users access the site with intent to purchase (compared to 40% on Facebook).
